Some Stay

Some people come into your life and stay for what is equal to an afternoon in the grand scheme of things. They are they, they leave an impression and words to remember, and then they go- on to new cities, new countries, leaving only photographs and memories.
  And that is alright.

But other people come into your life and stay there.
They may seem to have left once in a while- you lose touch, you pass one another without anything more than a polite hello, and you assume they will- like so many others- slip quietly out of your life like leaves being carried by the wind.
But they don’t. They stay. They remain intact, a part of your life and your little corner of the world. They continue to care about you, stop and catch up with you here and there, give you a hug or familiar smile, and cast a knowing glance at your anger and then soothe it with laughter. They make their presence known in sometimes seemingly little ways, but they are always there for you; always only a phone call or a few steps away.
And just as the faded photographs and worn memories of them remain, so do they.

Thank you for staying in my life. Thank you for remaining with me as we grow up, go on, and sort through the pages of notes left behind by everyone who has lived before us.
Thank you for never being out of reach or beyond the sound of my voice.
  Thank you for staying.

Pause Before You Post: Representing yourself responsibly and honestly online

When I was about eleven years old I went to summer camp for the first time. Before my sister and I left, my mother talked to us about something. She explained that we needed to mindful of our behavior at camp, not only because it is important to be kind and respectful, but also because we would be a representation of both our family and Christ to the people around us. That stuck with me.   Now, with so many of us daily browsing and posting to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, and blogs such as this, our representation is no longer limited to the people we are around in person- it is far-reaching, even global at times. It is certainly a far more widespread representation of yourself to post on the internet than it is to say something in person; on the internet, the dozens or hundreds of people you are connected with may see it. That is an enormous audience.   I feel very strongly that we need to be mindful of that audience, of that re...
Sometimes I look at other girls and wonder how they get such perfect curls in their hair. Then I remember that they get up early and curl it. I just get up late, squint at the mirror, and say “Please be curly, please be curly!” Well, THERE’S your problem.
